Plan the Perfect Engagement Photo Session

Congratulations! You’re engaged! You’ve told your family, your friends, and your co-workers and have started dreaming about your wedding day. You’re also beginning to plan the perfect engagement photo session and we’re here to share our tips with you.

We love photographing engagement sessions for two reasons. First, the couple is more at ease with each other than they are on their wedding day. There’s very little that can go wrong and there’s no stress about itineraries, guests, or dinner. There’s just two people in love having fun together basking in the glow of their recent engagement. And second, an engagement photo sessions opens the opportunity about shooting in a unique location. We have some spectacular wedding venues throughout New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and New England. However, sometimes the most meaningful location to a couple may not be able to accommodate a full-fledged wedding and therefore is more appropriate for an engagement photo session. Think creatively and think personally when choosing both venues.

As we think about why we love shooting engagement photos, we’ve compiled our best ideas to help you plan the perfect engagement photo session.

Wedding Venue

As we already touched on, think about having your engagement photo session at a different location than your wedding. A unique venue that has a special meaning for you as a couple is a good choice. And an engagement photo session at a different venue will provide you with an entirely separate group of photos with a different background and feeling than your wedding photos.

Four Seasons

Living in New England we have the opportunity to enjoy all four seasons. We’re sure you have a favorite—we do too. If you’re intent on having your engagement photos taken at the beach—be aware of the time of the year. Some days in April are picture perfect and some could have snow. On the other hand, a perfect fall day is ideal for a foliage filled photo. Some venues better lend themselves to engagement photo sessions at certain points in the calendar than others. Let’s think through what makes the most sense for your photos.

A Significant Location

If you have a location that has special meaning to you as a couple, let’s incorporate that into your engagement shoot. Perhaps it’s where you first met, or went on your first date, or the restaurant where you actually got engaged. Having photographs taken at a place that holds special meaning for you as a couple will make you enjoy the experience even more.

Personality

Your personality will shine through in your photographs and your venue should reflect that personality. What do you enjoy doing as a couple? If you’re outdoorsy and adventurous, a photo shoot in the mountains makes complete sense. Alternatively, you’re a concert-lover who enjoys the local music scene. Let’s think about photographing you at the neighborhood joint where your favorite band plays Saturday nights.

Save the Dates

Many couples use photos from their engagement session on their Save the Dates. If you’re planning to send a more whimsical Save the Date, an arcade or boardwalk might be the best choice for you. Something more formal? A botanical garden or old building with beautiful architecture are great choices.

We’ve photographed engagement sessions for couples throughout New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and New England and every one is unique. We love working with couples to plan the perfect engagement photo session. Contact us today to get started!
